Air plants, or Tillandsia spp., are increasingly popular houseplants. They are epiphytic, arboreal plants native to the Americas. Rather than absorbing water and nutrients through their roots, air plants use their roots solely to anchor themselves to surfaces and absorb all their water and nutrients from the air. Air plants are pretty easy to care for, though some species can be more finicky. The best starter species are usually thought to be Tillandsia ionantha and T. caput-medusae. These strange members of the bromeliad family do great in bathrooms, near kitchen sinks, and in tropical terrariums.
