How To Buy A Bird

The Avian Education Centre is a space where people can visit with a bird they would potentially like to add to their family/flock, go over the care sheets and answer questions. An appointment is needed, so please speak to one of our employees to set up an appointment to view available birds.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

How can I see what's available?

The available birds are online so that you can see each baby that is available. All you have to do is click this link and it will bring you to our live page!

What is the process of purchasing a bird?

If you are interested in purchasing a bird but aren’t sure what you need to do, we would be happy to assist you. There are images of our available birds on the live bird pages so that you can see them. Our available handfed birds will have a green banner across the top right corner that states "I AM FOR SALE".

Once you have some ideas about a pet you can contact us to make an appointment to visit with the bird, and ask any questions you may have about suitability for your home and family. Appointments to meet birds are 45 minutes.  Once the bird of your choice is ready to go home, you will be contacted to book another pickup appointment.  This time is to go over the care sheet, answer any questions, and any in store shopping you may need to do. Pickup appointment times are 90 minutes. Exotic Wings is happy to assist you in purchasing the correct products for your new pet. Please consider that your time allotment is from the booked start time to the corresponding end time. For example, showing up 20 minutes late does not extend the end time by 20 minutes. Please ensure you show up on time.

If you would like to purchase a baby that is not yet ready to go home, we ask for a minimum 50% deposit. We must receive payment within 24 hours of sending the invoice.  If you do not send payment the invoice will be cancelled and the bird will be back up for sale.

What's The Difference Between A Handfed Bird And A Cage Bird?

When picking out a bird, it is important to know what kind of bird you’re looking for. If you want a bird that you can interact with, take out of the cage and cuddle with, you are looking for a handfed bird. Handfed birds are raised exclusively by people from about 3 weeks old and placed in our nursery where we handfeed them until they are ready to go in a cage to learn to eat on their own. The reason we hand feed our birds is so that they become comfortable and bond with humans and get used to physical interactions.

Cage birds are different from handfed birds. Cage birds are typically not hand-raised and are not handled and socialized as babies. Because of this, they are not used to physical interactions with humans and are therefore less comfortable with being handled or played with. These birds prefer other bird for company. If you would like to add a bird to your house but are unsure that you have the time for attention to keep a handfed bird happy, cage birds may be the best option. These birds are lovely to look at and admire and, depending on the type of bird, add a bit of song to your day.

Handfed

  • Used to physical interactions
  • Can be handled, cuddled, etc
  • Require daily interactions with owner
  • Can sit on hand and shoulder
  • More involved relationship

Cage Bird

  • Prefer interacting with other birds
  • Want to stay in cage at all times
  • Less interested in interacting with people
  • Will not sit on hand or shoulder
  • Generally require less involvement

What does ‘Weaned’ mean?

Before we let your bird go home, we make sure that they've been eating seed and/or pellet on their own for a full week. It is very important to make sure that they are eating solid food to ensure that they continue eating their proper diet after you take them home.

All of our handfed birds are being weaned onto a diet of pellets and fresh foods.

We will not allow your bird to go home until we are 100% sure that they have weaned (transitioned) from the hand feeding formula to a seed or pellet diet. We will not make exceptions.
