Betta fish are among the most popular and beautiful pet fish in the world, but that wasn’t always so. The genus Betta contains more than 73 recognized species, but the fish most people are familiar with is Betta splendens (which means "beautiful warrior") or Siamese Fighting Fish. There is speculation that they were named after the ancient Asian Bettah warriors.
Betta fish in the wild spend periods of their life in shallow pools and slow moving water. They survive in these conditions using a special labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air from the surface on top of gill breathing like other fishes.
Wild betta fish are a dull greyish-green with short fins; nothing like the spectacularly colored, long-finned beauties of today! Through selective breeding, a wide range of colors and fin types have been developed, including: veiltail, delta, halfmoon, crowntail, double tail and many more.
Betta fish have been kept as captive pets for over 150 years! They were first imported to Europe in the 1890s, and later to the USA in 1910. In captivity bettas average a lifespan of 3 to 5 years, but 8+ years old is not unheard of!
Betta fish do best in a filtered, heated aquarium kept at 76 F - 84 F with decorative plants, rocks, and wood pieces. Betta fish thrive on a protein-rich diet of frozen, pelleted, and flake foods. It is important not to overfeed a betta fish. When changing water be sure the temperatures are exactly the same. We recommend allowing the amount of water you are changing to sit next to the current water for 24 hours before changing the water.
They are sent home in small containers which conveniently fit perfect in the cup holder of your vehicle.
