Noise Level & Talking Ability

Moderate. On occasion they can make shrill noises, but these instances are not common. They are great birds for people who prefer quiet birds. When they do make noise, it’s typically a ‘ki-ki-ki-ki’ sort of chatter.  Kakarikis are not known for their talking ability but they do have the ability to talk and can learn words and phrases if trained. Whether it is soft goofy mumbling, remarkably talented talking, or just simple mimicry, the Kakariki will always put a smile on your face.

Physical Features

Generally, they are described as a bit chubby looking with cute fluffy green feathers all over and a distinctive red crown. They are certainly one of the cuter looking pet parrots with their small heads and beaks atop puffy bodies. They also exhibit beautiful blends of blue and green feathers around the wings.

Kakarikis come in many colour mutations from green and yellow to solid yellow, to blue.

Pet Profile

Kakarikis are probably the most active of all parrots. They have bubbly personalities to match their bouncy way of life. The rarely walk, they almost always run, jump, and climb. These birds are on the same energy level as a toddler with a cup of coffee! Certainly one of the most loveable, entertaining species out there. When the kakariki is in the cage, they still often run around, and can scale the side of a cage without using their beak. Because of their high-energy lifestyle, experienced owners are recommended. Kakarikis can make good first birds but the owner should research ahead to make sure this is truly the best fit.

Kakarikis are one of the most playful and intelligent parrots. They’re often overlooked, but they are extremely inquisitive and constantly on the move. Always up to something and their comical antics will keep you entertained day-in, day-out. Their quirky personalities make them easy to bond with.

Diet

Offer seeds daily with pellets made always available in the cage. It’s recommended not to leave the seeds in the cage full time, just offer them daily. Pellets should remain the main diet. Fresh vegetables, sprouts, and some grains should be offered as frequently as possible, with some fruit on occasion.

Please note: if you are just taking a new bird home it is best practice to always leave their desired food in the cage full time. Water should always be available.

Kakariki are one of the few species of parrots that need a small amount of seeds every day. They eat almost constantly. Their metabolism is very high to support such an active lifestyle.

Housing

Kakarikis appreciate extra space as they are a busy bird. These energetic parrots will use just about every inch you give them. It is very important that Kakarikis have plenty of toys, and a good variety of perches, They particularly benefit from foraging toys, where they can release a little extra steam searching for the tasty treats hidden inside.

Purchasing A Bird FAQ's

Before You Buy

We offer a seven-day health guarantee on our handfed birds. A mandatory educational care sheet will be gone over at time of purchase. You must provide your bird with suitable shelter, food, water, vitamins and minerals from time of purchase.

We suggest that within three days (72 hours) of purchase, you bring your bird to an avian vet for a complete examination. This is at the cost of the pet owner. Should any health problem occur or be discovered, inform us IMMEDIATELY, with a written report otherwise the health guarantee is void. Any veterinary fees at this point need to be cleared by Exotic Wings & Pet Things Inc.

The health guarantee does not apply if there is another bird in your home that was not purchased from Exotic Wings & Pet Things Inc. or if the bird leaves the store unclipped.

We cannot guarantee the gender or temperament of your bird. Our handfed birds are tame but may take some time to adjust to their new surroundings. The more time is spent socializing with your pet bird after they have settled into your household, the better your relationship with your pet will be. After the seven day period any warranty will be at the discretion of Exotic Wings & Pet Things Inc.
